So here I am in Chachapoyus, Peru waiting for the Service Canada website to load so I can access very important information. But since the computers here are 5 years old, run IE6 and since the Service Canada website is terribly coded, this isn´t working out for me.

It´s hard to believe that Dave and I have been in Peru for 2 weeks already. The time has really flown by. We´ve strayed away from the commonly traveled path to make our way to the North.
We´ve been to sketchy cities, had some interesting run-ins and met some really nice people. We´ve also spent a good amount of time on a warm beach and went to the highest ruins in Peru, nestled in the high Andes and Amazon Basin.

We meet Pete on saturday and will then make our way south along the “Gringo Trail”

We have lot´s of stories and a lot to say and we still have a lot to do.

I’m not packed, I know very little Spanish, I forgot to exchange my money, I’m sitting at a cafe instead of getting things done, I don’t know where I’ll be sleeping Monday night, I forgot to buy insurance, I am only now looking into the country and in all respects, I don’t know what I’m doing. This, as you should know by now, is classic Jeremy.

For those who don’t know, I am going to Peru on Monday(and New York tomorrow) with my friend Dave and we will be meeting up with our friend Pete, and possibly Christine 2 weeks from now. Dave and I will spend 2 weeks in the north and then meet up with everyone and spend the rest of the trip in the south. The one thing we won’t be doing is going into the low Amazon but this isn’t the last time I plan on going to South America.
This is not to say that I am completely in the dark. I bought some hiking boots, I have an idea of what I’d like to bring with me in terms of clothing, I bought a Nalgene bottle, a day pack, some snacks, an amazing rain jacket(http://bit.ly/1oNp4) and my bag will be exploding with sandwiches for the trip down, Dave has a Lonely Planet book and we do have an idea of where we will be going once we land.

I’m terribly excited and terribly nervous for this trip. I’ve haven’t been out of North America since I was a kid and I’ve always wanted to go to South America. My earlier plans of hiking the Middle East or flying to the South Pacific were nixed due to financial “woes” and the second I found out Dave wanted to go down south, I was in. 500$ CND for a return ticket and a free ride down to New York? Done.
I am also hoping to get away with only spending 500-600$ while I’m there. Accommodations are between 5-10$ a night, buses are super cheap and you can easily eat a 3 course meal for 2$.
I’ve spent the last day searching for Spanish words and phrases which will come in handy and have been scribbling them in my notebook.
Along with “My hovercraft is full of eels! eek!” I can now ask for the bathroom, ask how much something is, tell a waitress that I don’t want meat and ask for help in an emergency.

I’ve been looking into insurance as I really don’t feel like leaving Peru with 50,000$ in medical bills. I figure it’s the neurotic Jew in me but just looking at what I can claim is really frightening me:
Medical Expenses, Emergency Evacuation, Repatriation of Remains, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Sports & Hazardous Activities, Flight Accident, Terrorism, Double Dismemberment, Kidnap & Extortion.
Double dismemberment? Kidnap & Extortion? What are we getting into?

Beautiful beaches, great food, the Andes, the Amazon rain forest, bungee jumping, the Nazka lines. It seems like this is going to be incredible.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to get any writing done while I’m in Peru but I’ll try my best. Regardless, I bought a little notebook with the goal of being able to tell a great story afterwards.
Wish me luck! It will hopefully be a safe and extremely fun trip and barring any double dismemberment I’ll see you all in a month.

Edit: Apparently RBC Travel Insurance covers me if both my limbs are cut off above the wrist or ankles(double dismemberment) but not if I were to lose both my hands or both my feet below the wrist or ankle. Interesting.

In classic Gaslight Anthem form, here is Brian Fallon covering Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen:

My friend Christine LaRiviere  just finished a witty and well written review for the Mono show on October 1st as part of the POP Montreal festival.
It wouldn’t be a lie to say that I’m linking to her article because I want to support my good friends in all their artistic endeavors and that I want to see them all do well in their future careers, but it also wouldn’t be a lie to say that I’m linking to her article because she just so happened to have quoted me in it! See if you can spot my well thought out and eloquent quote:

I’m unemployed with a lot of time to spare and money to blow. It’s not a healthy state to be in. I spend my days looking at all the things I’d like to buy, most of which I cannot afford. Those of you who know me, know me well enough to know that this is nothing new, although unlike past years, I am doing a lot better with my money and purchases.
What I’ve bought so far and what I’m looking to buy are things that I “need” more than just frivolous purchases that I really don’t. Things like winter coats, new clothes, running shoes, bike parts, new scanner, things for my trip to Peru etc etc. And honestly, the few purchases I’ve made that were unnecessary, I completely regret and will probably try to re-sell them.
I do have a problem with spending money, I know I do and I am trying to stop it…and I do believe I’ve been pretty good so far.
That being said, here are some things I’m looking at to buy for the winter. I could use a new winter jacket(and I’ll probably try and sell my older ones to make some cash)
first off, I love CPO shirts and am debating between one from the 1950s or one from the 1970s:

And as for winter coats, I’m thinking of getting this Navy Officer’s Pea Coat from the 1940s:

Alright, I need to save my money for my trip to Peru, but it’s going to be cold when I get back and I’ll need a coat, right? Exactly.

I’m trying to get motivated. I’ve gotten a lot done today but I’ve been on the couch, watching TV and eating food for quite some time. I’m reading the blogs and the tips & tricks and the Q&A’s on how to motivate myself to go run but in the end, there are two things that are going to get me out of my bed and get me dressed to run; it’s the thought of how good I’ll feel after my run and the fact that I just dropped 145$ on these ugly, ugly shoes and need to make the most of them:

I’ll have to admit it, everyone was right, my ankle problems were due to my shoes. I went for a short 2km run the other night and it felt like I was running on air. Breathing came easier, my back hurt less and my ankles gave me little problems. Two days later and my ankles feel 100%
My advice to anyone who wants to start running is to bite the bullet and spend the 100$ and get a good pair of shoes. Running in bad sneakers was the biggest mistake I made and delayed my growth as a runner by a very long time.
Tonight my goal is to hit 4.5km which would be the longest I’ve run yet and I feel confident that I can do it. I’ve been thinking about running and the the idea’s behind it as a sport and lifestyle choice lately and have a lot to say but I’ll have to save it for another entry as I really do need to get out and run.

On a related and final note, the Canadian Dollar is doing so well right now compared to the American, yet these shoes were 130$ CND but only 79$ US. 40$ difference!!! Ridiculous.
